Bangkok Pub Fire Kills 32, Negligence Suspected

Investigators have established negligence as their primary theory. An initial assessment by disaster officials pointed to an electrical short circuit in a ceiling air-conditioning unit, with the fire believed to have spread rapidly through flammable materials used to insulate the venue. Police said escape was hampered because exits were blocked or hard to reach: one rear door was obscured by a table selling sweets, another was narrowed by shelving, and a third had reportedly been bolted shut by an owner who feared customers would leave without paying. One survivor disputed this account, insisting a guard had guided people out of a back door with a torch. The disaster echoes earlier Thai nightclub fires, including 67 deaths at Bangkok's Santika Club in 2009 and 26 at the Mountain B venue in 2022.

Analysts note that stricter safety rules introduced after 2009 apply only to venues inside a handful of designated entertainment zones; establishments like this one, licensed as restaurants with live music, largely escape them. Bangkok's governor has acknowledged the loophole and ordered unannounced inspections of similar premises, while the prime minister visited the scene. The pub's owners issued an apology and promised to cooperate, but a lawyer's offer of 10,000 baht (about 300 US dollars) in initial compensation has angered grieving families, some of whom say they took out loans to pay for funerals. With investigators still examining the wiring and stage decorations, campaigners warn that, as after previous tragedies, promises of reform may once again fade.
