Amazon Beats Walmart in Fortune 500 List
Amazon is now the No. 1 company in America by revenue. It has passed Walmart to take the top spot on the Fortune 500 list. Walmart held first place for 13 years. In 2025, Amazon earned about $716.9billion. Walmart earned $713.2billion. The new list will appear in June 2026. Only four companies have ever been No. 1 in 72 years.
Amazon and Walmart grew in very different ways. Amazon's sales grew about 12% last year. Walmart's grew only 5%. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon's cloud business. It lets other firms use Amazon's computers online. AWS made nearly $129billion in 2025. AWS gave Amazon more than half of its profit. Amazon's ad business added over $68billion. Walmart started in 1962 in Arkansas. It still depends on its stores. But former boss Doug McMillon grew online sales to $120billion a year.
For Amazon's boss Andy Jassy, this is a big moment. Amazon plans to spend up to $200billion in 2026. The money will go to artificial intelligence (AI) , chips, robots, and small space satellites. Jassy also cut about 30,000 jobs. Walmart's new boss is John Furner. Walmart is unlikely to be first again soon. But Walmart's share price has gone up about 167% in five years. It is now worth over $1trillion.
