WHO Declares Emergency as Rare Ebola Strain Spreads

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, a rare form of Ebola seen in only two previous outbreaks, each of which killed roughly one in three of those infected. Crucially, there is no approved, strain-specific vaccine and no targeted treatment: licensed antibody therapies such as Inmazeb and Ebanga were developed for the more common Zaire ebolavirus, and their effectiveness against Bundibugyo has not been established. Experts believe the virus circulated undetected for weeks before it was formally identified on 24 April. Containment is especially difficult because the epicentre, the DRC's Ituri province, is scarred by years of armed conflict, with damaged hospitals, mass displacement and constant cross-border movement among refugees and gold miners.

Health agencies are racing to respond through contact tracing, isolation of patients, safe burials and community engagement, which scientists say are critical to halting transmission. The WHO has released almost $4m and is shipping protective equipment and medicine, while several American citizens exposed to the virus have been evacuated to Europe for monitoring. The Guardian reported that the United States, once a leading force in outbreak response, has been largely absent following deep cuts to global health funding and its planned withdrawal from the WHO. African health officials have urged neighbouring countries to strengthen screening rather than impose "fear-driven" travel bans, warning that the fastest way to protect the world is to support outbreak control at its source.
