Wardley and Dubois Clash for Heavyweight Title
Britain's Fabio Wardley will make the first defence of his WBO (World Boxing Organization) heavyweight title against compatriot Daniel Dubois on Saturday at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena, in front of an expected crowd of 23,500. At Friday's weigh-in, Dubois tipped the scales at a career-heavy 18 stone (115 kg) , nearly eleven pounds heavier than the 31-year-old champion. The pair came face-to-face on a circular, illuminated stage organisers branded The Cauldron, with Dubois, 28, declaring he would put him to sleep and Wardley responding by mocking his rival's previous defeats. Both men carry a remarkable knockout ratio of roughly 95 percent across their combined 42 wins, setting up a primal contest between two of British boxing's hardest punchers.
The two finalists arrive in Manchester from sharply different backgrounds. Wardley, who comes from a white-collar boxing scene with minimal amateur experience, has been outboxed at times by more skilful opponents but has repeatedly rescued himself with concussive finishes— a first-round destruction of Frazer Clarke and an 11th-round stoppage of Joseph Parker. Dubois, by contrast, has suffered three professional defeats— once to Joe Joyce and twice to Oleksandr Usyk— yet famously knocked out Anthony Joshua at Wembley in September 2024 before a post-war British record crowd of 96,000. After splitting briefly with trainer Don Charles following last summer's Usyk loss, Dubois returned in January, reuniting with Charles at his secluded Farm Gym in Hertfordshire. Pundits including David Haye and Derek Chisora are split on the outcome, with several warning that Dubois's thunderous jab could expose Wardley's defensive limitations.
The stakes extend beyond a single belt. Wardley has openly called for a unification bout with reigning undisputed champion Usyk, while another loss could be devastating for the introspective Dubois, who has long lived under the shadow of his father, Stan. Saturday's outcome will reshape the British heavyweight hierarchy in a year already dominated by talk of the long-anticipated Tyson Fury– Anthony Joshua showdown later this year.
