Ukrainian Drones Set Moscow Oil Refinery on Fire

The attack reflects Kyiv's strategy of taking the war deep into Russia and damaging the energy industry that pays for Moscow's war effort. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it retaliation, warning, "If Ukraine is going to burn, your Moscow will burn too," while pushing President Vladimir Putin toward talks. The strike came hours after Zelenskyy won fresh promises of support at this week's G7 (Group of Seven) summit. Russia's Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 555 Ukrainian drones overnight, nearly 200 of them near the capital — claims that could not be independently verified. Putin, who was hosting Southeast Asian leaders in Kazan, made no public comment.

The strikes revealed gaps in Moscow's air defences and disrupted daily life. Four airports closed for a time and more than 500 flights were cancelled or delayed, while drone debris injured at least 16 people, including two children. The refinery supplies much of the region's fuel, and gas stations in several parts of Russia have begun limiting purchases. Russian officials promised to hit back harder, while Moscow continued its own attacks on Ukrainian cities.
