King Charles Reveals £12.9m Tax Bill, a First

Unlike ordinary citizens, the monarch is not legally obliged to pay income tax, capital gains tax, or inheritance tax. Charles pays voluntarily under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), an agreement struck in 1993 after public pressure over royal costs and updated in 2023. His taxable income comes largely from the Privy Purse, the private fund fed by the Duchy of Lancaster estate, which generated £25.2 million in the year to March. Crucially, he can deduct spending on official royal duties before tax, and pays nothing on the Sovereign Grant from the Treasury. Because no breakdown was published, experts said it is impossible to verify how the figure was reached. Dan Neidle of Tax Policy Associates was blunter: "If it's voluntary, it's not tax."

The disclosure drew attention because the King's bill looks low beside other wealthy people. The Guardian noted that hedge fund boss Suneil Setiya, worth a similar £1.8 billion, paid £114 million, while author JK Rowling was billed £47 million. Writing in the Daily Mail, the self-described monarchist Amanda Platell observed that singer Harry Styles paid £24.7 million—roughly twice the King's bill—despite a far smaller fortune, and dismissed the release as a "PR operation". Historian Anna Whitelock said the move placed Charles "front and centre as a very rich man" and reflected a monarchy trying to appear responsive amid falling public support.
