Delivery Bots Spread Across LA; Hologram Aids LaGuardia

Both projects reflect a wider push to embed automation into everyday public life, but they have stirred very different reactions. In LA, where sidewalks are already narrow and congested, residents say the boxes on wheels block pedestrian traffic, weave through outdoor diners and may eventually replace human delivery drivers. Glendale is weighing a moratorium and Chicago has limited expansion; researchers at Cornell University have proposed a "robotability score" to rate which streets can safely accommodate the machines. At LaGuardia, by contrast, the operator frames Bridget as extra help during busy periods rather than a substitute for human staff. Miami International Airport unveiled four similar holograms about three weeks earlier, supporting 40 languages and linking with WhatsApp and an existing chatbot.

Reactions so far have been mixed. In LA, staff at restaurants such as Pazzo Gelato and Millie's Cafe describe the bots as a "minor nuisance" that hits people and clogs walkways; a New Jersey cyclist has sued after a robot allegedly hit him, leaving him with a broken collarbone and head injury. Yet The Guardian reports that some Angelenos "both pity and hate" the machines, cheering when one finally squeezes through a crowd. LaGuardia Gateway Partners says more Bridget units will be installed across both concourses. Whether travelers and pedestrians ultimately embrace these visible new neighbors, observers say, will depend less on the technology's polish than on whether it makes daily life genuinely easier.
